Born in Beijing, Fan started to learn guzheng at the age of six from the famous
guzheng player Mr. Tang Jinchi. At the age of nine and ten, Fan won 1st prize both
in Beijing National Juvenile & Children Chinese Traditional Music Solo Competition
and the National Juvenile & Children Chinese Traditional Music Solo Competition
respectively.
Fan attended the primary school affiliated to China Central Conservatory of Music in
1984, and entered the affiliated middle school in 1985. In 1991, she was admitted by
the Department of Traditional Music of Central Conservatory of Music with
outstanding examination results. During Fan’s four years study on the campus, she
followed the instruction from Mr. Wang Shihuang and Professor Li Meng, and has
won numerous prizes. In 1995, Fan graducated from the Conservatory with the
highest grades in the professional exam, and became a soloist in China Radio
National Music Orchestra.
Fan Weiqing’s performing style is a combination of primitive simplicity, elegance and
modernity. As a guzheng player, she is remarkably skillful in performing
contemporary works, and is especially capable of grasping various characteristics of
different genres, thanks to the instructions and guidance by Mr. Lin Maogen (from
the Chaozhou school), Mr. Ran Ninxin and Mr. Shi Zhaoyuan (from the Hakka school)
and Prof. Qiu Dacheng from China Conservatory of Music.
In 1996, Fan won 2nd prize in National Competition of guzheng Performance of
Traditional Works, and participated in recordeing the album “Selected Guzheng
Works by Famous Composers”. Up to now, Fan has performed in Europe, USA, and
Southeast Asian countries. In 1996, she participated in the founding of “Love, Plum
& Silent Moon”, an influential ensemble in the circle of Chinese traditional music,
which recorded and published later on an album called “Poem of Sunset Shadow”.
In 2000, Fan established Fan Weiqing Guzheng Classroom, drawing attention and
applause from the public. In 2001, Fan founded Beijing Fan Weiqing Music Culture
Center, recruiting students majoring in different Chinese traditional music
instruments, and has since then organized a number of traditional musical instrument
lectures and performances. In February 2002, Fan hold a pedagogic and
explanative concert performed by some renowned artists, jointly with Bao Huiqiao, Liu
Shikun and Yu Hongmei, and a concert performed by Fan Weiqing Music Culture
Center in Jinfan Music Hall, Beijing. In July 2002, Fan was appointed by the Ministry
of Culture as judge in Chinese Juvenile & Children Art Contest—1st Chinese
Traditional Instrumental Music Solo Competition. Also, she serves as judge in the
Guzheng Grading Panel for China Central Conservatory of Music and China
Institution of National Orchestral Music.
