Hakka School

Hakka guzheng music has its root from the north part of China.  When the Hakka
people migrated from the north in the 4th century, they brought their music into Canton
area.  Over the last 1600 years, Hakka guzheng music integrated with the guzheng
music in the south, while retains its unique characteristic.

There are two types of Hakka guzheng music: “Ban” with 68 measures, and the folk
songs.  The “Ban” is closer to the major in western music while the folk song is close
    to the minor.

Hakka School is known to have comprehensive left-hand technique.  While the melody
is simple, there are variation of left-hand vibrating methods that makes the sound
    sustains.

Famous Hakka School guzheng masters are Luo Jiuxiang and He Yuzhai.  Well
known songs are “Night Rain over Banana Pane”, “Water Lotus”, and “Sobbing at the
    Ai Mountain”.
