Guzheng Master Fan Shan-E presented a great concert “Golden
Autumn Zheng Music” yesterday in Toronto with 40 of her students.
Master Fan is a native of Caozhou started guzheng learning at age 16.
She entered Shanghai Music Conservatory in 1954 studying piano.
Later she switched major to guzheng and studied under the teaching of
Master Wang Zhuangzhi, the famous musician of Zhejiang Guzheng
School. Fan Shange also assisted Master Wang in arranging and
editing music notes of Zhejiang School. Upon graduation, Fan passed
the exam and entered Beijing National Movie Orchestra to perform
guzheng. She has then recorded numerous soundtracks for movies
and TV series, as well as composed many famous guzheng pieces,
such as “The Spring in the Snowy Mountain” and “Lucky River to my
Village.”
In 1992, Master Fan immigrated to Toronto and founded Fan Shange
Guzheng Music School. Master Fan realized that most of the students
here are learning guzheng as a habbit rather than seeking a
profession. Majority of the students are adults who has longer life
experience and want to express themselves through this ancient
instrument. Master Fan believes in order to express the music
thoroughly one has to understand the background of the music piece.
Thus, she often spent much time in explaining the history of the music
piece to her student.
For the past years, Master Fan has re-arranged many guzheng pieces
into ensemble style. The songs played in the concert, including
“Command of the General” and “The Scenery of Grassland”, are all her
new arrangements. Master Fan also performed solo pieces including
“The Butterfly Lover”, “The Spring in the Snowy Moutain”, and “The
Silver River”.
