Sun Wen-yan is born in Shanghai in 1940. She is the daughter of the famous folk
musician Sun Yude. Sun started studying folk music at a very young age. In 1955,
she passed the entrance exam of the affiliated middle school of Shanghai
Conservatory of music majoring in guzheng. In 1959, she continued her guzheng
learning in Shanghai Conservatory of Music following Master Wang Zhuangzhi of
the Zhejiang school. She has also learned from Cao Zheng, Ren Qingzhi, Gao
Zhicheng, Guo Yin, Wang Shingwu, and Lin Maogen. She graduated in 1965 and
stayed at Shanghai Conservatory of Music as a professional educator. She
co-publishes many textbooks with her husband He Baoquan and has written near
10 essays on guzheng.
