Wang Zhong-Shan
Wang Zhong-shan is a celebrated young zheng player.  He is of Mongolian descent,
but was born in Henan Province.  He started to study the zheng in his childhood, and
has received the guidance of a dozen of zheng players.  He is deeply rooted in the
“Henan School” of zheng playing.  In 1981, he entered Nanyang Art School, studying
under the zheng player Zhao Man-qin.  In 1986, he played the premieres of Defeating
the Tiger on the Mountain and Red Sun over Jinggang Mountain with newly invented
difficult techniques, and attracted the attention of many.  Afterwards, he entered the
China Conservatory, studying under the zheng player Li Wan-fen.  In 1989 he was
awarded in the “ART” Cup instrumental competition.  In 1992, he held his zheng
recital in Beijing.  In 1995, he won the first prize in the zheng section of an
international Chinese instrumental competition.  

Wang Zhong-Shan is now a zheng teacher in the China Conservatory.  Apart from
giving lessons, he also takes part in performances and musical production for TV
servies and motion pictures.  He has visited Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Poland, and
Macau, and has been invited to give lectures and performances in Hong Kong.  He is
innovative in the use of techniques of zheng playing, and pioneered the use of cyclic
fingering on the zheng to enrich its expressive ability.  

Wang Zhong-Shang is able to play in different styles.  His tone is gentle and bright.  
His interpretation is thoughtful and vivid, stressing on both the use of techniques and
the expression of emotion.  He considers it important to adopt the traditional
characteristics of Chinese music but not to be restricted by them.  His virtuoso playing
skills are dazzling, and he is given the name “Prince of the Guzheng” for his
promising future.
